In the fall of 2007, I walked into Dr. Robert Smith, Jr.'s preaching class atBeeson Divinity Schoolfull of fear and trepidation. As an introvert who would much rather write words for people to read than stand in front of a crowd and share those words out loud, I was terrified, but the class was required for my degree, so I dragged myself up to the preaching lab on the third floor and prepared for two semesters of pure misery.
Over time, Dr. Smith would identify, call out, and nurture gifts in me that I preferred to ignore. He pastored me, mentored me, prayed over me, and taught me how to rightly handle God's word. Now, nearly 20 years later, every single time I open my Bible and prepare to teach, I lean on the training I received at his hand.
After decades spent training men and women to share the gospel, Dr. Smith is retiring from theological education. I've spent the past couple of days at Beeson celebrating him at a conference in his honor.
Every single former student at the conference this week had the same kind of story to tell about Dr. Smith. He looked at them, saw gifts in them that they didn't know were there, and then equipped them to use those gifts for the glory of God. I am so very thankful for this man of God and his influence in my life. What a precious gift he has been to me!
Who are your mentors in the faith? When was the last time you told them how much they mean to you? If it's been a while, give them a call, write a text, or send a card and tell them how the Lord has used them in your life. Thanks be to God for the gift of older, wiser saints to show the rest of us how things are done!
